Nothing says "Christmas" like a gorgeous light display. However, all the temporary electrical installations that make our homes and holidays brighter present safety hazards—where there's excess electricity, there is danger.

Therefore, appropriate safety steps must be taken. With this in mind, here are some vital Christmas and holiday electrical tips to help you have a safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Check for damage to electrical decorations

After you've brought down all those boxes that have been in the attic since last Christmas, closely inspect all the lights and extension cords. Then, check for missing or cracked bulbs. Empty or broken sockets might cause overheating, which can lead to a fire hazard.

Take a close look at the wires. If the insulation is damaged, don't use the decoration. If you still want to use a strand with damaged insulation, be sure to use electrical tape to cover the wire, not duct tape.

Then, examine your extension cords. Check for insulation or burn damage. If there is evidence of any damage, throw them away, and get new, certified ones.

Exterior decorations

A dazzling outside holiday display is one of the best ways to get into the spirit of the season, but not if the exterior decorative lighting presents a safety hazard. It's unsafe to use typical lighting outside. It is worth the cost of paying a bit more for certified holiday lighting for your home's exterior.

General safety tips

When hanging the Christmas lights using a ladder, have a family member hold the ladder for you to avoid falling and suffering an injury. Also, do not use typical nails and staples. These can damage the insulation and create a fire hazard. Use hangers that are specifically designed for holiday decorations.

Never overload extension cords; don't use them for any other electrical device except the holiday decorations. Get new, certified cords, and don't exceed the overload limit. To be safe, plug the lighting decorations into a surge protector.

Turn them off timely

Even if every precaution was met, don't go to sleep with the Christmas lights on. Turn everything off and unplug the cords. Make sure not to leave the lights up until spring. Take the decorations down no more than a week after New Year's Eve.

Stay safe during the holidays

The holiday season comes with a lot of potential safety hazards. Be extra cautious. Take every step necessary to ensure a safe and sound holiday season. Stay safe and have yourself a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
